The global climate crisis demands action on many fronts, including challenging the status quo when it comes to constructing new buildings. That’s why Vessel has reimagined all aspects of the way in which buildings are designed, built and operated in order to enhance the built environment without jeopardizing the natural one.
By way of example, Vessel’s patented design utilizes a façade system that is twice as energy efficient as would be required under the most stringent building codes. This significantly reduces heating and cooling demand (think of how the thick walls of ancient stone buildings allowed for temperate interiors) and consequently, power consumption. Meanwhile, the structures lobby and corridors are open to fresh air, meaning that any energy used is to heat or cool the residential units and not empty common areas.
Our design teams also work to identify the sustainable building materials and has partnered with like-minded suppliers to deploy the latest, eco-friendly components and technologies. For example, Vessel uses no paint and instead utilizes a proprietary wall panel system that is largely recyclable. This emphasis is placed at every level of the supply chain and procurement process.
Another carbon reducing aspect of Vessel’s solution is the construction process itself. Key components are delivered already manufactured and then assembled in a variety of configurations depending upon the building design. Gone is the typical parade of hundreds of fuel-guzzling and idling truck deliveries, replaced by just a handful of deliveries over a few weeks.
While the design and construction process are both critical in Vessel’s commitment to sustainability, perhaps the greatest contribution comes from building residents’ ability to control and contribute to the efficiency of their own space. Each unit features Vessel’s proprietary vOS operating system, which is inextricably linked to the building’s hardware, energy, and water systems, allowing residents to monitor and regulate their own consumption. It even offers feedback to residents on how they can more efficiently manage energy consumption. Hundreds of sensors and electro-mechanical devices work in unison to manage each apartment’s temperature, air quality, water usage, lighting, security, and entertainment systems. vOS also acts as a virtual “super” keeping an eye on key building systems. All these features work together seamlessly to maximize the lifestyle and well-being of residents.
Vessel was created as a 21st century solution for the many issues facing today’s housing market.
